In 2022, the EU coniferous roundwood market increased by 2.3% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coniferous roundwood production shrank slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the EU

In 2022, shipments abroad of roundwood (coniferous) decreased by -15.6% to X cubic meters, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. In general, exports, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 26%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X cubic meters. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coniferous roundwood exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 39%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the Czech Republic (X cubic meters) and Germany (X cubic meters) represented the main exporters of roundwood (coniferous) in the European Union, together generating 51% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X cubic meters) and Poland (X cubic meters), together mixing up a 17% share of total exports. Sweden (X cubic meters), Austria (X cubic meters), Finland (X cubic meters), France (X cubic meters), Slovakia (X cubic meters), Latvia (X cubic meters), Belgium (X cubic meters), Spain (X cubic meters) and Estonia (X cubic meters) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +20.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 61% of total exports. The Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Latvia, Slovakia, Spain and Estonia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +17.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per cubic meter, surging by 7.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per cubic meter), while Spain ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of roundwood (coniferous) decreased by -7.1% to X cubic meters in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 19%. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coniferous roundwood imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Austria (X cubic meters), distantly followed by Germany (X cubic meters), Sweden (X cubic meters), Belgium (X cubic meters), Poland (X cubic meters), Latvia (X cubic meters) and Finland (X cubic meters) represented the main importers of roundwood (coniferous), together creating 74% of total imports. In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per cubic meter, surging by 9.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 35%. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
