In 2022, overseas shipments of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 10%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports of remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, exports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal dropped modestly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands was the major exporter of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal in the European Union, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 40% of total exports in 2022. Italy (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Spain (13%), Denmark (11%) and Germany (6.9%). The following exporters - Belgium (X tons) and France (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.4% share of total exports.

Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Spain (+5.0%) and Italy (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +5.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belgium (-2.3%), Denmark (-4.2%), Germany (-6.5%) and France (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+10 p.p.), Spain (+5.1 p.p.) and Italy (+3.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of France (-2.8 p.p.), Denmark (-5.5 p.p.) and Germany (-6.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal supplying countries in the European Union were Italy ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 74% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +6.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -2.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 12%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal were imported in the European Union; surging by 2.4% against 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal rose notably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at $X in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons), distantly followed by France (X tons), Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons), Ireland (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the key importers of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal, together mixing up 76% of total imports. Denmark (X tons), Portugal (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Romania (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+11.9%), Austria (+8.5%), Portugal (+8.5%), Spain (+4.6%), Ireland (+3.5%) and Belgium (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +11.9% from 2012-2022. Sweden, Italy, Germany, Denmark and the Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Portugal and Spain increased by +1.8 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, France ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 53% of total imports. Belgium, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Ireland, Austria, Portugal, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

Among the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +17.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 4.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
