Semiconductor Device Market Size in the EU

The EU semiconductor device market contracted slightly to $X in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. The total consumption indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +62.3% against 2019 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, semiconductor device production expanded significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 24%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in the EU

In 2021, approx. X units of semiconductor devices were exported in the European Union; growing by 4.7% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, semiconductor device exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany prevails in exports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 56% of total exports in 2021. The Netherlands (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Spain (X units), Italy (X units) and France (X units). All these countries together took approx. 30% share of total exports. Poland (X units) and Austria (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to semiconductor device exports from Germany stood at +5.3%. At the same time, Poland (+10.2%) and Austria (+7.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +10.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, France (-7.4%), Spain (-14.2%), Italy (-23.3%) and the Netherlands (-31.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Germany (+48 p.p.), Poland (+3.1 p.p.) and France (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Italy (-10.2 p.p.) and the Netherlands (-52.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest semiconductor device supplier in the European Union, comprising 30% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 4.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany totaled +4.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-16.3% per year) and Poland (+16.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, growing by 21% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while Spain ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+31.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of semiconductor devices, when their volume increased by 133% to X units. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, semiconductor device imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Spain (X units) represented the major importer of semiconductor devices, comprising 44% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Italy (X units), Poland (X units), Germany (X units) and Denmark (X units), together committing a 39% share of total imports. The Czech Republic (X units) and Hungary (X units) held a little share of total imports.

Spain was also the fastest-growing in terms of the semiconductor devices imports, with a CAGR of +18.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+16.8%), Poland (+14.7%), Hungary (+13.7%) and Denmark (+8.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-9.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Spain (+35 p.p.), Poland (+7.2 p.p.), Denmark (+2.7 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+2.3 p.p.) and Hungary (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Italy (-23.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported semiconductor devices in the European Union, comprising 21% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Denmark ($X), with a 7% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany totaled +2.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Denmark (+6.4% per year) and Italy (-3.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -18.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed perceptible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 97% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while Spain ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
