In value terms, semiconductor LED production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted prominent growth. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

For the fifth year in a row, the European Union recorded growth in overseas shipments of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs), which increased by 29% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 66%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, semiconductor LED exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands was the largest exporter of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) in the European Union, with the volume of exports accounting for X units, which was approx. 54% of total exports in 2021. Germany (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 21% share, followed by Portugal (7.1%). Slovenia (X units), Belgium (X units), Spain (X units) and Italy (X units) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to semiconductor LED exports from the Netherlands stood at +19.5%. At the same time, Portugal (+49.8%) and Slovenia (+26.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Portugal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +49.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Germany (-3.9%), Spain (-6.1%), Italy (-7.6%) and Belgium (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Netherlands, Portugal and Slovenia increased by +38, +6.9 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the largest semiconductor LED supplying countries in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X), together comprising 77% of total exports. Portugal, Belgium, Slovenia and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 8.9%.
Portugal, with a CAGR of +29.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, rising by 3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per unit), while Portugal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
In 2021, overseas purchases of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) increased by 50% to X units, rising for the fifth year in a row after four years of decline. In general, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 83%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, semiconductor LED imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands was the largest importing country with an import of about X units, which accounted for 41% of total imports. Spain (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Germany (13%), Italy (4.7%) and France (4.5%). Greece (X units), Portugal (X units), Poland (X units) and Belgium (X units) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to semiconductor LED imports into the Netherlands stood at +25.3%. At the same time, Poland (+75.3%), Portugal (+34.1%), Spain (+22.0%), France (+7.0%) and Greece (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +75.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Germany (-5.0%), Italy (-6.3%) and Belgium (-6.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+31 p.p.), Spain (+10 p.p.), Portugal (+3.6 p.p.) and Poland (+3.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Belgium, Italy and Germany saw its share reduced by -6.3%, -10.3% and -23.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest semiconductor LED importing markets in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 62% of total imports. Poland, France, Italy, Portugal, Belgium and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +39.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 37%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per unit), while Greece ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (-2.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
