The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, sesame oil exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 50%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the major exporters of sesame oil in 2022, resulting at approx. 38% and 32% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), comprising a 13% share of total exports. Italy (X tons), Poland (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Denmark (with a CAGR of +50.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest sesame oil supplying countries in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 81% of total exports. Italy, Poland, Austria and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +43.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 6.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+9.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After five years of growth, supplies from abroad of sesame oil decreased by -1.3% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, sesame oil imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of sesame oil, namely the Netherlands, France and Germany, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Italy (X tons) took a 5.2% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Spain (5%). Belgium (X tons), Poland (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Austria (X tons), Ireland (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Spain, Belgium, Italy, Poland, Austria, Sweden, Denmark and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Among the main importing countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +23.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 9%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
