The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell significantly in the following year.
In value terms, sesame seed exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

The Netherlands was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 42% of total exports. Germany (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 25% share, followed by Poland (7.2%) and Austria (5.2%). Greece (X tons), Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), France (X tons) and Croatia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +37.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sesame seed supplying countries in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 73% share of total exports. Austria, Greece, Spain, France, Italy and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
Croatia, with a CAGR of +40.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 6.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in France ($X per ton) and Austria ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) and Croatia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of sesame seed decreased by -23.4% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 21%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, sesame seed imports dropped to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 47%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Greece (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the major importers of sesame seed in the European Union, together constituting 45% of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X tons), France (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Spain (X tons). All these countries together took near 39% share of total imports. Romania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +6.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sesame seed importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($X), Greece ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 56% of total imports. Poland, France, Italy, Spain and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
Romania, with a CAGR of +11.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, surging by 11% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in France ($X per ton) and Romania ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
