Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X square meters. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sheep leather exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Spain represented the largest exporter of sheep or lamb skin leather in the European Union, with the volume of exports finishing at X square meters, which was near 76% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Italy (X square meters), committing a 17% share of total exports. Bulgaria (X square meters) and Greece (X square meters) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sheep leather exports from Spain stood at +7.1%. At the same time, Bulgaria (+71.0%) and Italy (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Spain amounted to +3.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (-6.3% per year) and Bulgaria (+83.9% per year).

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per square meter in 2021, increasing by 8.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per square meter), while Greece ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
