After two years of growth, the EU shelled hazelnut market decreased by -8.1% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In value terms, shelled hazelnut production dropped slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +36.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 42%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Exports in the EU

In 2021, exports of shelled hazelnuts in the European Union surged to X tons, rising by 29% against the previous year. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +32.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +57.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 49%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Italy represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 70% of total exports. Germany (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by the Netherlands (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 18% share of total exports. The following exporters - the Czech Republic (X tons) and Spain (X tons) - each reached a 4.4% share of total exports.

Italy was also the fastest-growing in terms of the shelled hazelnuts exports, with a CAGR of +11.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+3.0%), Germany (+2.3%) and the Netherlands (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Spain (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Italy (+23 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the Netherlands, Spain and Germany saw its share reduced by -3.5%, -5.9% and -5.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest shelled hazelnut supplier in the European Union, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 5.2% share.

In Italy, shelled hazelnut exports increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+3.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+2.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4% against the previous year. Export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, shelled hazelnut export price increased by +19.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 42%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Italy ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

In 2021, shelled hazelnut imports in the European Union amounted to X tons, almost unchanged from the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports amounted to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main importers of shelled hazelnuts in 2021, amounting to near 39% and 29% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), generating a 12% share of total imports. Poland (X tons), Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Austria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +15.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 79% of total imports. Poland, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +20.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 28% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
