The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Romania (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and France (X tons) represented the major exporters of shelled walnuts, together comprising 79% of total exports. Austria (X tons), Spain (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Italy (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +44.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last decade. At the same time, Poland (+28.8%), the Czech Republic (+23.7%), Romania (+16.9%), the Netherlands (+13.9%), Belgium (+10.8%), Italy (+9.5%), Austria (+8.5%), Spain (+8.4%), Greece (+8.0%), France (+4.5%) and Sweden (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +28.8% from 2012-2022. Germany (+7 p.p.), the Netherlands (+3.1 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Spain and France saw its share reduced by -2.4% and -5.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
