In 2021, overseas shipments of silicones (in primary forms) increased by 53% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports recorded a measured increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 70%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, silicone exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the three major exporters of silicones (in primary forms), namely Belgium, France and the Netherlands, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Italy (X tons) held a 6.3% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Spain (6.1%). The Czech Republic (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 81% share of total exports. Italy, Spain and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +5.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
In 2021, supplies from abroad of silicones (in primary forms) increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 33%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, silicone imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +49.3% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belgium (X tons), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons), France (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the major importers of silicones (in primary forms), together constituting 79% of total imports. Poland (X tons), Austria (X tons), Ireland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Ireland (with a CAGR of +33.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest silicone importing markets in the European Union were Belgium ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 52% of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, France, Spain, Poland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Ireland, which together accounted for a further 38%.
Among the main importing countries, Ireland, with a CAGR of +17.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 21%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
