In value terms, Belgium ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported skim milk in the European Union, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with an 8.3% share.

In Belgium, skim milk imports expanded at an average annual rate of +39.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+7.1% per year) and Italy (-10.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 5.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, skim milk import price increased by +62.7% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
