In 2021, shipments abroad of skim milk decreased by -16.8% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, skim milk exports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Ireland (X tons) represented the main exporters of skim milk, together committing 75% of total exports. Belgium (X tons), Poland (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Ireland (with a CAGR of +36.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest skim milk supplying countries in the European Union were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 60% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +20.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the EU
Skim milk imports reached X tons in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 18%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, skim milk imports stood at $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +64.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Belgium represented the main importer of skim milk in the European Union, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 40% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons), together making up a 45% share of total imports. Poland (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Belgium was also the fastest-growing in terms of the skim milk imports, with a CAGR of +29.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Poland (+17.2%) and Germany (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the Netherlands (-5.6%), Italy (-10.4%) and Portugal (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Belgium (+37 p.p.), Germany (+4.9 p.p.) and Poland (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Portugal (-2.3 p.p.), the Netherlands (-5.6 p.p.) and Italy (-23.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Belgium ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported skim milk in the European Union, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with an 8.3% share.
In Belgium, skim milk imports expanded at an average annual rate of +39.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+7.1% per year) and Italy (-10.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 5.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, skim milk import price increased by +62.7% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+13.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
