In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in the EU slate market, when its value increased by 47% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of slate increased by 1.7% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, slate exports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 8.3% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

France was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 50% of total exports. Germany (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Poland (7.4%), Portugal (7.2%), Spain (6.9%) and Greece (6.7%). The Czech Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of slate. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+10.0%), Germany (+6.1%), Greece (+5.2%), Portugal (+2.2%) and Spain (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +10.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Poland (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Germany, Greece and the Czech Republic increased by +5.5, +2.6 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest slate supplying countries in the European Union were France ($X), Spain ($X) and Portugal ($X), with a combined 70% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, Greece, Poland and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 20%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +9.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -5.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of slate was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, slate imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of slate imports in 2021 were France (X tons), Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Belgium (X tons), together reaching 75% of total import. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), achieving a 6% share of total imports. Portugal (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +27.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest slate importing markets in the European Union were France ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 57% of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Denmark and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Portugal, with a CAGR of +32.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a slight decline. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
