In value terms, the largest smoked fish other than salmon and herring supplying countries in the European Union were Poland ($X), Denmark ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 68% of total exports. These countries were followed by Austria, the Netherlands and Lithuania, which together accounted for a further 22%.

Austria, with a CAGR of +108.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Germany dominates herring structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 61% of total imports in 2021. Austria (X tons) took a 9.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by France (6.1%). Belgium (X tons), Romania (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Italy (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Germany increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Austria (+26.7%), France (+9.6%), Romania (+9.6%), the Czech Republic (+5.3%) and Belgium (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Austria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +26.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Netherlands (-4.2%) and Italy (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Austria and Germany increased by +7.3 and +4.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported smoked fish other than salmon and herring in the European Union, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Austria ($X), with an 8.8% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany amounted to +9.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Austria (+23.9% per year) and France (+8.7% per year).
