In value terms, the largest smoked fish other than salmon and herring supplying countries in the European Union were Poland ($X), Denmark ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 68% of total exports. These countries were followed by Austria, the Netherlands and Lithuania, which together accounted for a further 22%.

Austria, with a CAGR of +108.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports into Germany increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Austria (+26.7%), France (+9.6%), Romania (+9.6%), the Czech Republic (+5.3%) and Belgium (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Austria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +26.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Netherlands (-4.2%) and Italy (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Austria and Germany increased by +7.3 and +4.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported smoked fish other than salmon and herring in the European Union, comprising 66% of total imports.
