Sorghum Market Size in the EU

The EU sorghum market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, surging by 17% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the last decade. The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were France (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Hungary (X tons), together accounting for 85% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +23.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average sorghum yield in the European Union amounted to X tons per ha, with an increase of 2.7% compared with 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the sorghum yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. In 2022, shipments abroad of sorghum decreased by -4.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +18.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 79%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, sorghum exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2022, France (X tons) represented the largest exporter of sorghum, mixing up 65% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Hungary (X tons), creating a 19% share of total exports. Austria (X tons), Romania (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from France increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Austria (+35.0%), Slovakia (+22.7%), Hungary (+21.7%), Spain (+11.5%) and the Netherlands (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Austria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +35.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Romania (-10.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Hungary (+14 p.p.) and Austria (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Romania saw its share reduced by -11.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, France ($X) remains the largest sorghum supplier in the European Union, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 3.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in France stood at +5.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hungary (+14.4% per year) and Spain (+9.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 10% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 24%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -5.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 79% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sorghum imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Spain was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 49% of total imports. Italy (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Belgium (X tons) and Poland (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 37% share of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Spain was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sorghum imports, with a CAGR of +12.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+9.4%), Belgium (+6.1%) and Italy (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Portugal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-7.0%) and Germany (-16.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (+30 p.p.), Belgium (+3.6 p.p.) and Poland (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the Netherlands and Germany saw its share reduced by -7.2% and -25.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Spain ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sorghum in the European Union, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with an 8.5% share.

In Spain, sorghum imports expanded at an average annual rate of +20.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (+2.3% per year) and Belgium (+6.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed temperate growth.
