Sparkling Wine Market Size in the EU

The EU sparkling wine market shrank markedly to $X in 2022, falling by -25.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a perceptible decrease. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X litres of sparkling wine were exported in the European Union; with an increase of 3.5% on 2021 figures. Total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +23.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 19%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, sparkling wine exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +43.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 38%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Italy represented the key exporter of sparkling wine in the European Union, with the volume of exports accounting for X litres, which was approx. 49% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by France (X litres) and Spain (X litres), together making up a 41% share of total exports. Germany (X litres) took a little share of total exports.

Italy was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sparkling wine exports, with a CAGR of +10.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, France (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Spain (-3.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Italy (+22 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while France and Spain saw its share reduced by -3.4% and -19.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, France ($X) remains the largest sparkling wine supplier in the European Union, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in France amounted to +4.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (+11.0% per year) and Spain (-2.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per litre, flattening at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while Spain ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of sparkling wine, when their volume decreased by -7.1% to X litres. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +13.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 23%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X litres, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, sparkling wine imports fell modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +26.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 31%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X litres), distantly followed by Belgium (X litres), France (X litres), Sweden (X litres), the Netherlands (X litres), Latvia (X litres), Austria (X litres) and Lithuania (X litres) represented the major importers of sparkling wine, together constituting 69% of total imports. Poland (X litres), Italy (X litres), the Czech Republic (X litres), Spain (X litres) and Denmark (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Latvia (with a CAGR of +22.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Belgium ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 43% of total imports. The Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, France, Denmark, Austria, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.

Latvia, with a CAGR of +18.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per litre in 2022, rising by 3.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 6.8% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per litre), while Latvia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
