Spinach Market Size in the EU

In 2022, after six years of growth, there was decline in the EU spinach market, when its value decreased by -3.9% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Spinach Production in the EU

In value terms, spinach production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +44.2% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the production volume increased by 14% against the previous year. In 2022, the average yield of spinach in the European Union fell to X tons per ha, remaining constant against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 7.9%. Over the period under review, the spinach yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 13%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In 2022, approx. X tons of spinach were exported in the European Union; with a decrease of -8.2% on the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, spinach exports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the major exporters of spinach in 2022, recording approx. 36% and 32% of total exports, respectively. The Netherlands (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by France (7.5%). The following exporters - Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons) - each resulted at a 5.1% share of total exports.

Export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, spinach export price increased by +65.2% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, the amount of spinach imported in the European Union fell slightly to X tons, which is down by -2% on 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 20%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, spinach imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of spinach, namely Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, represented more than half of total import. It was distantly followed by France (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together achieving a 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Spain (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Italy (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Ireland (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 14% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +24.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported spinach in the European Union, comprising 31% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 9.7% share.

In Germany, spinach imports increased at an average annual rate of +12.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+5.6% per year) and Belgium (+3.5% per year).

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -10.3% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, spinach import price decreased by -11.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
