Over the period under review, exports recorded a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, grape wine spirits exports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 32%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

France represented the key exporting country with an export of about X litres, which reached 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Spain (X litres), making up a 15% share of total exports. Italy (X litres), Portugal (X litres) and Germany (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of spirits obtained from distilled grape wine or grape marc. At the same time, Portugal (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Portugal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +9.2% from 2012-2022. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Spain (-7.5%) and Italy (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of France (+15 p.p.) and Portugal (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Italy (-4.5 p.p.) and Spain (-12.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. In value terms, France ($X) remains the largest grape wine spirits supplier in the European Union, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 3.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 1.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in France amounted to +2.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Spain (-6.7% per year) and Italy (-4.0% per year).

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per litre, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 16%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per litre, leveling off in the following year.

In 2022, purchases abroad of spirits obtained from distilled grape wine or grape marc increased by 1.8% to X litres, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grape wine spirits imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, France (X litres), distantly followed by Portugal (X litres), Spain (X litres), Germany (X litres), Italy (X litres), the Netherlands (X litres) and Lithuania (X litres) represented the key importers of spirits obtained from distilled grape wine or grape marc, together creating 80% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Portugal (with a CAGR of +6.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 39% of total imports. Lithuania, Spain, Portugal and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per litre), while Portugal ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
