Sugar Beet Market Size in the EU

The EU sugar beet market was estimated at $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a slight contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average sugar beet yield in the European Union declined slightly to X tons per ha, flattening at the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 15%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the sugar beet harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of sugar beet, when their volume decreased by -10.8% to X tons. Total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 61%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, sugar beet exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +105.0% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 28%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Germany represented the key exporter of sugar beet in the European Union, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 59% of total exports in 2022. Slovakia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Hungary (10%) and Belgium (7.2%). The Netherlands (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sugar beet exports from Germany stood at +25.3%. At the same time, Lithuania (+63.4%), Latvia (+26.7%) and Slovakia (+17.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +63.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belgium (-1.2%), Hungary (-4.2%) and the Netherlands (-16.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Germany (+49 p.p.), Slovakia (+9.6 p.p.), Lithuania (+2.4 p.p.) and Latvia (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Belgium (-5.8 p.p.), Hungary (-14.5 p.p.) and the Netherlands (-20.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest sugar beet supplier in the European Union, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany amounted to +19.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+15.4% per year) and the Netherlands (-8.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a mild descent. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +20.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

The Czech Republic represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 36% of total imports. In value terms, the largest sugar beet importing markets in the European Union were the Czech Republic ($X), Denmark ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 59% of total imports.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +133.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.2% against the previous year.
