In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of sulphites, when their volume decreased by -4.8% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In value terms, sulphites exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Italy represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), constituting a 16% share of total exports. Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons) and Finland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Italy increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Finland (+54.7%) and Spain (+10.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +54.7% from 2012-2022. France and Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-9.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Italy and Spain increased by +6.1 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest sulphites supplier in the European Union, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 9.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 4.8% share.

In Italy, sulphites exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (+5.1% per year) and Spain (+9.2% per year).

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 58% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. Sulphites imports shrank to X tons in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 9.2%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sulphites imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +75.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

France represented the main importer of sulphites in the European Union, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 33% of total imports in 2022. The Netherlands (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Spain (X tons) and Sweden (X tons). All these countries together held near 34% share of total imports. At the same time, Sweden (+10.3%), Portugal (+7.0%), Ireland (+6.6%), Poland (+4.9%), Germany (+3.8%) and Italy (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sweden emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +10.3% from 2012-2022. Spain and Austria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-2.1%) and Belgium (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of France (+5.5 p.p.), Sweden (+3.6 p.p.) and Portugal (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Spain (-2 p.p.), Belgium (-4.9 p.p.) and the Netherlands (-6.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, France ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sulphites in the European Union, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 11% share.

In France, sulphites imports increased at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+6.9% per year) and the Netherlands (+3.7% per year).
