In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in the EU surgical glove market, when its value decreased by -30.4% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a buoyant increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 78%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, surgical glove exports fell notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the major exporters of surgical gloves in 2022, reaching near 38% and 28% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Denmark (X tons), together comprising a 22% share of total exports. Hungary (X tons) and Spain (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Denmark (with a CAGR of +37.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 72% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Austria, Hungary, Spain and Denmark, which together accounted for a further 15%.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +26.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -11.4% against the previous year. Export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, surgical glove export price increased by +55.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After ten years of growth, supplies from abroad of surgical gloves decreased by -27.1% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 56%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, surgical glove imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented the main importers of surgical gloves in 2022, recording approx. 30% and 27% of total imports, respectively. Denmark (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by France (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 14% share of total imports. From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany totaled +13.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+17.2% per year) and France (+11.9% per year).

Based on 2022 figures, surgical glove import price increased by +84.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
