Non-Chicken Table Egg Market Size in the EU
In 2021, the EU non-chicken table egg market decreased by -21.3% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Non-Chicken Table Egg Production in the EU
In value terms, non-chicken table egg production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 6.8%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
Poland (X tons) remains the largest non-chicken table egg producing country in the European Union, accounting for 54% of total volume. Moreover, non-chicken table egg production in Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the Netherlands (X tons), threefold. Sweden (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 5.1% share.
In Poland, non-chicken table egg production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+0.4% per year) and Sweden (+0.9% per year).
Non-Chicken Table Egg Exports
Exports in the EU
In 2021, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of table eggs, excluding hen eggs, when their volume decreased by -47.3% to X tons. Overall, exports showed a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 75%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, non-chicken table egg exports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands represented the main exporter of table eggs, excluding hen eggs in the European Union, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 64% of total exports in 2021. Portugal (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by France (X tons) and Spain (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 28% share of total exports. Belgium (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the table eggs, excluding hen eggs exports, with a CAGR of +23.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Portugal (+22.3%), France (+5.0%) and Spain (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Belgium (-13.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+59 p.p.), Portugal (+11 p.p.), France (+5.8 p.p.) and Spain (+4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belgium saw its share reduced by -3.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest non-chicken table egg supplier in the European Union, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Portugal, with a 9.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands amounted to +13.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Spain (-0.2% per year) and Portugal (+16.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced setback. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
In 2021, purchases abroad of table eggs, excluding hen eggs decreased by -81.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 195% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, non-chicken table egg imports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Spain (X tons) represented the key importer of table eggs, excluding hen eggs, achieving 35% of total imports. Belgium (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by France (16%) and the Netherlands (13%). Romania (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Luxembourg (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Spain (with a CAGR of +14.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, the largest non-chicken table egg importing markets in the European Union were Spain ($X), France ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 59% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Romania, Portugal and Luxembourg lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
Romania, with a CAGR of +10.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 215% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
