The EU tamping machinery market reduced dramatically to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -32.8% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, tamping machinery exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Germany represented the main exporting country with an export of around X units, which finished at 68% of total exports. Sweden (X units) took a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (6.3%) and Austria (4.8%). The following exporters - Spain (X units), France (X units) and Denmark (X units) - each recorded a 5.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to tamping machinery exports from Germany stood at +4.9%. At the same time, Sweden (+34.0%), Austria (+23.0%), Spain (+22.7%) and Denmark (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sweden emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +34.0% from 2012-2021. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Sweden, Germany, Austria and Spain increased by +9.2, +8.1, +3.8 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest tamping machinery supplier in the European Union, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sweden ($X), with a 7.9% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany amounted to +4.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sweden (+28.0% per year) and France (+3.5% per year).

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, surging by 4.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 9.9%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while Spain ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

For the sixth year in a row, the European Union recorded growth in overseas purchases of tamping or compacting machinery, which increased by 30% to X units in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, tamping machinery imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Germany represented the major importing country with an import of about X units, which reached 38% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Denmark (X units), Poland (X units), France (X units), the Czech Republic (X units) and Sweden (X units), together comprising a 39% share of total imports. The following importers - Austria (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Belgium (X units) and Hungary (X units) - together made up 12% of total imports.

Germany was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tamping or compacting machinery imports, with a CAGR of +25.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Hungary (+20.5%), the Czech Republic (+20.3%), Sweden (+19.0%), Denmark (+18.0%), Poland (+14.7%), Austria (+14.2%) and the Netherlands (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belgium (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Germany (+23 p.p.), Denmark (+3.8 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+2.6 p.p.), Sweden (+1.9 p.p.) and Poland (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the Netherlands (-3.1 p.p.), France (-12.1 p.p.) and Belgium (-15.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Denmark ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 44% of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Sweden, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic, Belgium and Hungary, which together accounted for a further 39%.

Among the main importing countries, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +17.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a deep reduction. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while Germany ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
