Tantalum Market Size in the EU
The EU tantalum market rose markedly to $X in 2022, growing by 14% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the EU
After three years of growth, shipments abroad of tantalum decreased by -27.1% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +78.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 82%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, tantalum exports fell to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +87.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons) and Estonia (X tons) dominates exports structure, together creating 93% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Italy (X tons), achieving a 5.5% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Estonia (with a CAGR of +15.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest tantalum supplying countries in the European Union were the Czech Republic ($X), Estonia ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 99% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Estonia, with a CAGR of +13.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 25% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Estonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+0.3%).
Tantalum Imports
Imports in the EU
In 2022, purchases abroad of tantalum increased by 155% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports saw a measured increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, tantalum imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced decline. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) represented the key importer of tantalum, constituting 56% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), mixing up a 36% share of total imports. The following importers - France (X tons) and Italy (X tons) - together made up 5.9% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +101.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest tantalum importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 96% of total imports. Italy lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 2.2%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Italy, with a CAGR of +88.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
