Taro (Cocoyam) Market Size in the EU

After four years of growth, the EU taro (cocoyam) market decreased by less than 0.1% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of taro production in the European Union contracted slightly to X ha, with a decrease of -1.7% on the previous year's figure. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the (cocoyam) exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, taro (cocoyam) exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.

Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Spain (+65.2%), Bulgaria (+56.0%) and France (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +65.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cyprus (-2.7%) and Portugal (-13.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Spain, Bulgaria and the Netherlands increased by +11, +4.9 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest taro (cocoyam) supplier in the European Union, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Bulgaria, with a 2.3% share.

In the Netherlands, taro (cocoyam) exports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (+82.9% per year) and Bulgaria (+175.4% per year).

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of taro decreased by -28.4% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 41%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, taro (cocoyam) imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion.
