Tea Market Size in the EU

In 2022, the EU tea market decreased by -0.1% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Tea Production in the EU

In value terms, tea production reduced sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the production volume increased by 53,184,506% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Latvia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of tea production, accounting for 99.9% of total volume.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Latvia totaled -50.0%.

Tea Exports

Exports in the EU

In 2022, exports of tea in the European Union reached X tons, rising by 2.5% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tea exports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented the key exporters of tea, together comprising 88% of total exports. France (X tons) and Austria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +3.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest tea supplier in the European Union, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 15% share.

In Poland, tea exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-5.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+4.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

In 2022, approx. X tons of tea were imported in the European Union; remaining stable against the previous year's figure. In general, imports recorded a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 4.8%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tea imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 13%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented roughly 48% of total imports in 2022. The Netherlands (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by France (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Ireland (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 35% share of total imports. Spain (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +2.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 47% of total imports. The Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +6.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
