Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, tomato exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented the main exporters of tomatoes in the European Union, together making up 61% of total exports. France (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons) and Portugal (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 27% share of total exports. The following exporters - Poland (X tons) and Italy (X tons) - together made up 5.6% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +4.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest tomato supplying countries in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Spain ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 80% of total exports. Belgium, Italy, Poland and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.
Portugal, with a CAGR of +7.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -4.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, imports of tomatoes in the European Union dropped to X tons, remaining constant against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 6.7% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, tomato imports amounted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) and France (X tons) were the largest importers of tomatoes in the European Union, together generating 44% of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons) held a 9.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Poland (6.6%), Spain (6.5%) and Italy (5.6%). The following importers - Bulgaria (X tons), Romania (X tons), Sweden (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +10.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest tomato importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 58% of total imports. Poland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Romania, the Czech Republic, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
Among the main importing countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +14.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
