The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, preserved tuna exports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +72.9% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Spain (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the largest exporters of tuna (prepared or preserved) in 2021, reaching approx. 39% and 30% of total exports, respectively. Italy (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Portugal (7.3%) and Germany (5.4%). France (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +16.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Spain ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 84% of total exports.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +16.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 10%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of tuna (prepared or preserved), when their volume decreased by -7.4% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 13%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, preserved tuna imports contracted modestly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the key importer of tuna (prepared or preserved) in the European Union, mixing up 79% of total import. Portugal (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Poland (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +12.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($X), Spain ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 56% of total imports. The Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Austria and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.
In terms of the main importing countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +11.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Italy ($X per ton) and Austria ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
