For the third year in a row, the EU umbrella market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 26% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, the amount of umbrellas exported in the European Union surged to X units, growing by 24% on the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +76.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, umbrella exports fell to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +62.1% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

Greece was the major exporter of umbrellas in the European Union, with the volume of exports accounting for X units, which was approx. 38% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X units), Germany (X units) and Poland (X units), together committing a 37% share of total exports. The following exporters - Spain (X units), Austria (X units), Italy (X units), France (X units), Hungary (X units) and Belgium (X units) - together made up 18% of total exports.

Greece was also the fastest-growing in terms of the umbrellas exports, with a CAGR of +60.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Hungary (+13.1%), Poland (+11.9%), the Netherlands (+7.4%), France (+4.4%), Spain (+2.9%) and Austria (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-2.4%) and Belgium (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Greece (+38 p.p.) and Poland (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Spain (-2.1 p.p.), Austria (-3.2 p.p.), Italy (-4.8 p.p.), Belgium (-9.6 p.p.) and Germany (-15.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest umbrella supplying countries in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Austria ($X), together comprising 47% of total exports. Poland, Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, Greece and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

Greece, with a CAGR of +36.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -24.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per unit), while Greece ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

In 2022, overseas purchases of umbrellas increased by 37% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, umbrella imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +44.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Greece (X units) and Germany (X units) were the key importers of umbrellas in 2022, accounting for near 21% and 19% of total imports, respectively. Italy (X units) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Spain (X units), France (X units), the Netherlands (X units) and Poland (X units). All these countries together took approx. 41% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Greece (with a CAGR of +33.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest umbrella importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($X), France ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 48% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Spain, Poland and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Greece, with a CAGR of +14.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -21.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then plummeted in the following year.
