In 2021, shipments abroad of uncooked pasta decreased by -11.8% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, uncooked pasta exports fell to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, leveling off in the following year.
Exports by Country
Italy dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Spain (X tons), achieving a 4.8% share of total exports. The following exporters - Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons), Greece (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and France (X tons) - together made up 12% of total exports.
Exports from Italy increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Spain (+12.3%), Germany (+5.0%), Belgium (+2.7%), France (+2.4%) and the Czech Republic (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +12.3% from 2012-2021. Greece experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Spain increased by +2.7 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest uncooked pasta supplier in the European Union, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 3.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 3.4% share.
In Italy, uncooked pasta exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+3.2% per year) and Spain (+10.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of uncooked pasta decreased by -8.2% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 10%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, uncooked pasta imports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons) and France (X tons) represented roughly 51% of total imports in 2021. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.4% share, followed by Belgium (5.5%). The following importers - Sweden (X tons), Poland (X tons), Spain (X tons), Austria (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Romania (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Croatia (X tons) - together made up 24% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +10.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest uncooked pasta importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 56% share of total imports. Belgium, Spain, Austria, Sweden, Poland, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Romania and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +13.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
