After two years of decline, the EU unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons market increased by 4.1% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the market value increased by 5.4% against the previous year. Exports in the EU

After five years of growth, shipments abroad of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons decreased by -9% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 114%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Belgium represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 75% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Spain (5.3%). France (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons. At the same time, the Netherlands (+25.7%), France (+8.7%) and Spain (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +25.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Netherlands increased by +13 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) remains the largest unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons supplier in the European Union, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with an 8.1% share.

In Belgium, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+34.7% per year) and Spain (+0.0% per year).

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +42.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Italy (X tons) and Austria (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Belgium increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Spain (+17.5%) and the Netherlands (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +17.5% from 2012-2021. Austria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-2.0%), Italy (-2.9%) and Germany (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium increased by +6.6, +4.3 and +3.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belgium ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 71% of total imports. Germany, Spain, Italy and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +10.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Austria ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
