For the fifth year in a row, the EU vegetable product market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 17% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption posted a strong increase. Vegetable product exports totaled X tons in 2022, stabilizing at the year before. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -8.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, vegetable product exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 38%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Spain (X tons), distantly followed by Portugal (X tons), France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the major exporters of vegetable products, together committing 90% of total exports. Italy (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +28.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Portugal ($X), Spain ($X) and Germany ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 64% share of total exports. Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +37.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+19.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of vegetable products decreased by -0.1% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, leveling off in the following year.

In value terms, vegetable product imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of vegetable products, namely Italy, Germany and Spain, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), comprising a 9.6% share of total imports. Poland (X tons), France (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, the largest vegetable product importing markets in the European Union were Italy ($X), Spain ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 76% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Italy, with a CAGR of +24.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 26% against the previous year.
