The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Exports in the EU
In 2021, exports of vitrifiable enamels and glazes for ceramics, enamelling or glass in the European Union surged to X tons, with an increase of 21% against the year before. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, enamels and glazes exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Spain prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 78% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Italy (X tons), comprising an 8.8% share of total exports. Germany (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Spain increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Poland (+12.0%), Germany (+3.7%) and the Czech Republic (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +12.0% from 2012-2021. Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Spain (+8.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Italy saw its share reduced by -5.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the largest enamels and glazes supplier in the European Union, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 14% share.
In Spain, enamels and glazes exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+5.9% per year) and Italy (+0.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
After two years of decline, purchases abroad of vitrifiable enamels and glazes for ceramics, enamelling or glass increased by 10% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, enamels and glazes imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Poland was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 30% of total imports. Italy (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Portugal (X tons). All these countries together took near 51% share of total imports. France (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to enamels and glazes imports into Poland stood at +4.9%. At the same time, Portugal (+22.3%), Bulgaria (+17.5%), Italy (+14.0%) and the Czech Republic (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Portugal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +22.3% from 2012-2021. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Italy (+8 p.p.), Bulgaria (+5.3 p.p.), Portugal (+4.8 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+3.4 p.p.) and Poland (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while France and Germany saw its share reduced by -2.2% and -18.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Poland ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 52% of total imports. These countries were followed by France, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Portugal, which together accounted for a further 24%.
Among the main importing countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +16.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight reduction. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
