From 2015 to 2022, production of growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X litres of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages were exported in the European Union; increasing by 4.4% on 2021. Total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +65.3% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages amounted to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Italy (X litres), distantly followed by Germany (X litres), Spain (X litres), France (X litres), the Netherlands (X litres), Sweden (X litres) and Poland (X litres) were the major exporters of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages, together comprising 77% of total exports. The following exporters - Ireland (X litres), Belgium (X litres), Latvia (X litres), Finland (X litres), Greece (X litres) and Austria (X litres) - together made up 17% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +22.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages supplying countries in the European Union were Italy ($X), France ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 49% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Ireland, Poland, Latvia, Belgium, Austria, Finland and Greece, which together accounted for a further 46%.

Among the main exporting countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +11.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per litre, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 14%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per litre), while Finland ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the EU

In 2022, the amount of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages imported in the European Union expanded remarkably to X litres, increasing by 13% on the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 24%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages rose rapidly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, Germany (X litres), distantly followed by France (X litres), the Netherlands (X litres), Spain (X litres) and Italy (X litres) were the largest importers of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages, together committing 55% of total imports. Poland (X litres), Belgium (X litres), Ireland (X litres), Latvia (X litres), Austria (X litres), Luxembourg (X litres), the Czech Republic (X litres) and Denmark (X litres) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Germany increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belgium (+12.5%), Luxembourg (+11.8%), Poland (+8.2%), France (+6.3%), Latvia (+6.2%), Italy (+5.9%), the Czech Republic (+5.6%), Austria (+4.2%), Denmark (+2.9%) and Spain (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +12.5% from 2012-2022. The Netherlands and Ireland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Belgium (+2.1 p.p.) and France (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Spain (-1.7 p.p.), Ireland (-2 p.p.) and the Netherlands (-3.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages in the European Union, comprising 22% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 11% share.

In Germany, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+5.7% per year) and the Netherlands (+5.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per litre in 2022, dropping by -2.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 9% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per litre.
