Wallpaper Market Size in the EU
For the third consecutive year, the EU wallpaper market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -8% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption saw a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 7.1%. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Wallpaper Production in the EU
In value terms, wallpaper production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 4.4%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in the EU
In 2021, shipments abroad of wallpaper and wall coverings decreased by -3.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 1.4%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wallpaper exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a pronounced decrease. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Germany was the major exporter of wallpaper and wall coverings in the European Union, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 41% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), Italy (X tons), France (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons), together mixing up a 50% share of total exports. Poland (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Exports from Germany decreased at an average annual rate of -6.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Latvia (+21.2%) and Belgium (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +21.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Netherlands (-1.5%), France (-3.0%), Poland (-5.0%) and Italy (-13.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belgium (+11 p.p.), Latvia (+6.1 p.p.), the Netherlands (+2.2 p.p.) and France (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Germany and Italy saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -10.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 64% share of total exports. France, the Netherlands, Poland and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
Among the main exporting countries, Latvia, with a CAGR of +26.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 12% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
For the third consecutive year, the European Union recorded growth in purchases abroad of wallpaper and wall coverings, which increased by 3.2% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 7.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wallpaper imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a mild decrease. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
France represented the major importer of wallpaper and wall coverings in the European Union, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 31% of total imports in 2021. Latvia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Belgium (X tons). All these countries together took near 45% share of total imports. Spain (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Hungary (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Italy (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wallpaper imports into France stood at -4.9%. At the same time, Latvia (+14.2%), the Netherlands (+6.7%) and Hungary (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +14.2% from 2012-2021. Bulgaria and Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-1.2%), Germany (-2.1%), the Czech Republic (-3.8%), Spain (-4.3%), Belgium (-6.7%), Sweden (-7.7%) and Lithuania (-22.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Latvia (+9.4 p.p.), the Netherlands (+6.2 p.p.) and Poland (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Belgium (-2.4 p.p.), France (-3.9 p.p.) and Lithuania (-14 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, France ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wallpaper and wall coverings in the European Union, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with an 8.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in France stood at -1.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+5.9% per year) and Belgium (-2.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
