Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +15.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, wheat gluten exports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 52%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The biggest shipments were from Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons) and France (X tons), together finishing at 63% of total export. The Netherlands (X tons) took a 9.4% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Poland (7.5%), Austria (6.9%) and Lithuania (6.4%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +88.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 63% share of total exports. Poland, Lithuania, Austria and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

Among the main exporting countries, Austria, with a CAGR of +80.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 11% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wheat gluten imports amounted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) and France (X tons) represented roughly 49% of total imports in 2022. Belgium (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Germany (6.5%), Poland (6.4%) and Spain (6.2%). Greece (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In terms of the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +35.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, surging by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
