The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wheat starch exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The shipments of the three major exporters of wheat starch, namely Lithuania, Germany and the Netherlands, represented more than half of total export. France (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Poland (8.7%), Hungary (5.5%) and Italy (4.8%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +170.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest wheat starch supplying countries in the European Union were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Lithuania ($X), with a combined 64% share of total exports. These countries were followed by France, Poland, Italy and Hungary, which together accounted for a further 31%.

Among the main exporting countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +140.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in the Netherlands ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) and Hungary ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

Imports in the EU

For the third consecutive year, the European Union recorded growth in purchases abroad of wheat starch, which increased by 24% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +85.0% against 2012 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wheat starch imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +106.1% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Germany was the largest importer of wheat starch in the European Union, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 35% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), France (X tons), Finland (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together comprising a 54% share of total imports. Belgium (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Germany increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Italy (+19.7%), Poland (+15.8%), Finland (+8.9%) and France (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Italy emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +19.7% from 2012-2021. The Netherlands and Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Poland, Germany and Italy increased by +6.9, +5.6 and +4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wheat starch in the European Union, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany amounted to +7.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (-0.2% per year) and France (+5.4% per year).
