The following exporters - Germany (X square meters) and the Netherlands (X square meters) - together made up 4.7% of total exports.

While the share of Italy (+9.3 p.p.), Spain (+3.6 p.p.), the Netherlands (+1.7 p.p.) and Romania (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Germany (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest silk fabric supplier in the European Union, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Romania, with a 4.4% share.

In Italy, silk fabric exports plunged by an average annual rate of -7.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (-8.2% per year) and Romania (-2.9% per year).

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per square meter in 2021, reducing by -12.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, Italy ($X), France ($X) and Romania ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 74% of total imports. These countries were followed by Bulgaria, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Portugal and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 21%.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +3.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per square meter, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per square meter), while Portugal ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
