Italy represented the major exporter of woven woolen fabrics in the European Union, with the volume of exports amounting to X square meters, which was approx. 46% of total exports in 2021. Denmark (X square meters) took a 5.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Germany (8.6%), the Czech Republic (3.8%) and Spain (14%). Romania (X square meters), Bulgaria (X square meters), the Czech Republic (X square meters), Portugal (X square meters), Denmark (X square meters), Belgium (X square meters), Lithuania (X square meters) and France (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Italy decreased at an average annual rate of -4.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Denmark (+13.8%), Spain (+12.5%), Romania (+9.0%), Bulgaria (+5.0%) and Lithuania (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Denmark emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +13.8% from 2012-2021. Portugal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belgium (-1.9%), the Czech Republic (-3.7%), Germany (-4.1%) and France (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (+9.7 p.p.) and Denmark (+4.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Germany and Italy saw its share reduced by -2.6% and -13.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest woolen fabric supplier in the European Union, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 6.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Italy stood at -5.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-11.3% per year) and Denmark (+5.4% per year).

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per square meter in 2021, rising by 7.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2019 to 2021, the the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per square meter), while Spain ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (-1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of woven woolen fabrics increased by 12% to X square meters, rising for the second consecutive year after five years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, woolen fabric imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 6.9%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The Netherlands (X square meters), Romania (X square meters), Bulgaria (X square meters), Poland (X square meters), Portugal (X square meters), Denmark (X square meters), Germany (X square meters), Lithuania (X square meters), Spain (X square meters), France (X square meters), Italy (X square meters) and Sweden (X square meters) represented roughly 89% of total imports in 2021. Hungary (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +13.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Italy ($X) and Romania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 41% of total imports. Germany, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Poland, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Sweden and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 51%.

Among the main importing countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +3.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per square meter in 2021, falling by -5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 8.2%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per square meter), while Spain ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
