Yams Market Size in the EU

In 2022, the EU yams market increased by 4.9% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Yams Production in the EU

In value terms, yams production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 117%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Portugal (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of yams production, comprising approx. 90% of total volume. Moreover, yams production in Portugal exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Spain (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Portugal totaled +1.7%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Spain (-8.5% per year) and Denmark (+28.7% per year).

In 2022, the average yams yield in the European Union contracted significantly to X tons per ha, which is down by -15.8% compared with 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, recorded mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 114% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the yams yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The yams harvested area contracted modestly to X ha in 2022, flattening at the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 12%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in the EU

In 2022, exports of yams in the European Union fell notably to X tons, with a decrease of -62.8% on the year before. In general, exports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 424% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, yams exports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 250% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the largest exporters of yams in the European Union, together recording approx. 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by France (X tons) and Spain (X tons), together making up a 20% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +59.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest yams supplying countries in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Italy ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 91% of total exports. Spain lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 5%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +59.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of yams, when their volume decreased by -32.4% to X tons. In general, imports, however, saw a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 92%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, yams imports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 65%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, France (X tons) was the main importer of yams, making up 47% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Belgium (X tons), together generating a 47% share of total imports. Ireland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ireland (with a CAGR of +8.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 87% share of total imports. Belgium and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7.2%.

Ireland, with a CAGR of +9.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Ireland ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
