Man-Made Filament Yarn Market Size in the EU

In 2021, the EU man-made filament yarn market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2021, overseas shipments of man-made filament yarn decreased by -6.6% to X tons, falling for the sixth consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, man-made filament yarn exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 39% of total exports. Italy (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 41% share of total exports. Spain (X tons), France (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from the Czech Republic increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Latvia (+12.5%), Slovakia (+8.6%), the Netherlands (+4.8%) and Spain (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +12.5% from 2012-2021. Hungary experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Poland (-6.3%), Germany (-6.3%), France (-10.0%), Belgium (-10.7%) and Italy (-12.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Czech Republic (+21 p.p.), Latvia (+2.8 p.p.), the Netherlands (+2.6 p.p.), Hungary (+2.4 p.p.) and Spain (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Germany, France, Belgium and Italy saw its share reduced by -2.1%, -3.2%, -8% and -15.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest man-made filament yarn supplying countries in the European Union were the Czech Republic ($X), Italy ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 64% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, the Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +15.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 18% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+10.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of man-made filament yarn was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, man-made filament yarn imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a mild shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Belgium was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 29% of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Italy (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Romania (X tons). All these countries together held near 51% share of total imports. The following importers - France (X tons), Spain (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.

Imports into Belgium decreased at an average annual rate of -2.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+11.0%), Poland (+10.2%), Denmark (+9.1%), France (+4.0%) and Spain (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +11.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Portugal (-1.0%), Romania (-2.9%), Germany (-4.7%), Italy (-5.0%) and the Netherlands (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Denmark (+5.6 p.p.), Poland (+3.9 p.p.), France (+1.9 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Italy, Germany and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -2.5%, -2.8% and -9.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 42% share of total imports. Denmark, Italy, Romania, Poland, France, the Czech Republic, Spain and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 49%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +11.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 38%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
