Abrasives Market Size in Europe
The Europe abrasives market rose significantly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -10.6% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, abrasives production expanded notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -8.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe
In 2021, overseas shipments of abrasives (natural) increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 84% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, abrasives exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Greece dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2021. The Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from Greece increased at an average annual rate of +9.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Netherlands (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +11.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Germany (-20.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Greece (+22 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Germany (-24.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest abrasives supplying countries in Europe were the Netherlands ($X), Greece ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 70% of total exports.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +20.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 32% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 41%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+11.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Abrasives Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2021, approx. X tons of abrasives (natural) were imported in Europe; growing by 29% on the year before. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +66.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, abrasives imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +69.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands was the major importer of abrasives (natural) in Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 32% of total imports in 2021. Germany (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by Russia (9%), France (8.2%), Poland (6.7%), Sweden (6.5%), Italy (6%) and Denmark (5.5%).
Imports into the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Poland (+10.4%), Sweden (+8.0%), Russia (+7.8%), Germany (+3.4%) and Italy (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +10.4% from 2012-2021. Denmark experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+7 p.p.), Poland (+3.1 p.p.), Russia (+3 p.p.) and Sweden (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Denmark and France saw its share reduced by -2.4% and -4.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported abrasives (natural) in Europe, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands amounted to +17.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+10.2% per year) and Italy (+5.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, flattening at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 24%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
