The UK experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of acetic anhydride. At the same time, the Netherlands (+5.3%) and Switzerland (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +5.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Belgium (-11.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the UK, the Netherlands and Switzerland increased by +16, +7.9 and +3.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest acetic anhydride supplying countries in Europe were Belgium ($X), the UK ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 89% share of total exports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +8.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, acetic anhydride imports in Europe fell to X tons, with a decrease of -8.1% on the previous year. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, acetic anhydride imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Belgium (X tons) represented the main importer of acetic anhydride, committing 44% of total imports. Germany (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by the Netherlands (15%) and Switzerland (7.3%). France (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Spain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Belgium increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Switzerland (+5.2%), Spain (+4.9%) and the Netherlands (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Switzerland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +5.2% from 2012-2021. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-1.6%) and France (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Belgium (+6.4 p.p.), the Netherlands (+3.3 p.p.) and Switzerland (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of France (-1.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest acetic anhydride importing markets in Europe were Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 71% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Switzerland, France, Italy and Spain, which together accounted for a further 22%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +9.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 32% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
