Aluminium Foil Market Size in Europe

After two years of decline, the Europe aluminium foil market increased by 51% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, aluminium foil production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, production attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports in Europe

In 2021, shipments abroad of aluminium foil increased by 3.6% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, aluminium foil exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight reduction. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Italy (X tons), Greece (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and France (X tons) represented the largest exporters of aluminium foil, together mixing up 63% of total exports. The following exporters - the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons), Poland (X tons), Slovenia (X tons), Luxembourg (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and the UK (X tons) - together made up 26% of total exports.

Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of aluminium foil. At the same time, Greece (+7.3%), the UK (+6.6%), Bulgaria (+6.1%), Belgium (+4.2%), Poland (+3.2%), Slovenia (+2.5%) and Italy (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Greece emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +7.3% from 2012-2021. Luxembourg and France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-3.2%), Sweden (-5.0%) and Spain (-9.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Greece, Italy and Belgium increased by +4.7, +3.1 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest aluminium foil supplier in Europe, comprising 30% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Greece, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+0.6% per year) and Greece (+7.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of aluminium foil, when their volume decreased by -0.4% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 6.2%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, aluminium foil imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons), France (X tons), Italy (X tons), Poland (X tons), the UK (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Austria (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented roughly 81% of total imports in 2021.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +6.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 34% of total imports.

Poland, with a CAGR of +6.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
