Animal Fats Market Size in Europe
In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in the Europe animal fats market, when its value decreased by -25.3% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted strong growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, animal fats production shrank remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 77%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of animal fats and oils, when their volume increased by 6.5% to X tons. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -34.5% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, animal fats exports expanded to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +45.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 73%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Belgium was the key exporter of animal fats and oils in Europe, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 50% of total exports in 2021. Germany (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Croatia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons). All these countries together took near 28% share of total exports. Romania (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Greece (X tons), Spain (X tons), Austria (X tons), Italy (X tons), the UK (X tons) and France (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Belgium increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Hungary (+88.4%), Austria (+86.2%), Greece (+73.0%), Romania (+56.5%), Croatia (+31.1%), France (+13.4%), the Netherlands (+9.6%) and Germany (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +88.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Italy (-3.6%), Spain (-7.4%) and the UK (-28.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Belgium (+16 p.p.), Croatia (+9.5 p.p.), Hungary (+6.2 p.p.), Germany (+4.7 p.p.), Romania (+3.5 p.p.), Greece (+3.1 p.p.), Austria (+2.3 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Spain (-3 p.p.) and the UK (-41.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Belgium ($X) emerged as the largest animal fats supplier in Europe, comprising 29% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 9.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Belgium amounted to +15.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+6.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+22.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -4.3% against the previous year. Export price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, animal fats export price increased by +75.4% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 55%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+13.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
In 2021, overseas purchases of animal fats and oils increased by 6.2% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 97% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, animal fats imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Sweden was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 50% of total imports. Denmark (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Hungary (10%) and Spain (8.8%). The following importers - Latvia (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the UK (X tons) - each reached a 9.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to animal fats imports into Sweden stood at +69.5%. At the same time, Denmark (+73.5%), Spain (+27.0%), Latvia (+23.2%), Hungary (+14.7%) and Germany (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Denmark emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +73.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the UK (-10.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Sweden (+49 p.p.), Denmark (+11 p.p.), Spain (+5.4 p.p.) and Latvia (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Germany (-1.8 p.p.) and the UK (-22.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Sweden ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported animal fats and oils in Europe, comprising 31% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Denmark ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with an 8.5% share.
In Sweden, animal fats imports expanded at an average annual rate of +35.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Denmark (+37.0% per year) and Spain (+31.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 9.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
