In 2021, the Europe antibiotic market decreased by -15.7% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
Antibiotic Production in Europe
In value terms, antibiotic production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -16.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Europe
In 2021, approx. X tons of antibiotics were exported in Europe; remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, exports recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 12% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, antibiotic exports plummeted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 7%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Spain (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the key exporters of antibiotics in 2021, reaching approx. 32% and 23% of total exports, respectively. Italy (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Bulgaria (12%) and Belgium (5.8%). The following exporters - Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons) and France (X tons) - together made up 7.5% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +13.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest antibiotic supplying countries in Europe were Italy ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Spain ($X), with a combined 49% share of total exports. Belgium, France, Germany, Bulgaria and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +3.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, waning by -16.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of antibiotics, when their volume decreased by -20.9% to X tons. In general, imports saw a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 24%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, antibiotic imports declined rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of antibiotics, namely the Netherlands, Spain and Italy, represented more than third of total import. The UK (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons), Russia (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 32% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +9.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
In value terms, the largest antibiotic importing markets in Europe were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 51% share of total imports. France, Spain, Belgium, the UK and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Russia, with a CAGR of +8.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 30%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
