Apple Market Size in Europe

The Europe apple market reduced modestly to $X in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Apple Production in Europe

In value terms, apple production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 41%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Poland (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Italy (X tons), with a combined 46% share of total production. France, Ukraine, Germany, Moldova, Spain, Romania, Hungary, Serbia, the UK and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Moldova (with a CAGR of +9.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average yield of apples in Europe expanded modestly to X tons per ha, growing by 4.1% compared with the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the yield increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the apple yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, approx. X ha of apples were harvested in Europe; remaining constant against 2020. Over the period under review, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 5.5%. Exports in Europe

In 2021, apple exports in Europe contracted to X tons, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. Overall, exports continue to indicate a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apple exports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) and Italy (X tons) represented the key exporters of apples in Europe, together mixing up 54% of total exports. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), Moldova (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Serbia (X tons), together generating a 25% share of total exports. Belgium (X tons), Spain (X tons), Greece (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Austria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Serbia (with a CAGR of +12.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest apple supplier in Europe, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 14% share.

In Italy, apple exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (-4.8% per year) and Poland (-0.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 1.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 27%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

For the fourth year in a row, Europe recorded decline in supplies from abroad of apples, which decreased by -2.6% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports saw a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apple imports reached $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 22%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the key importers of apples in Europe, together committing 35% of total imports. The UK (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons) and Spain (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 30% share of total imports. Belarus (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Romania (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Austria (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Spain, France, Belgium, Sweden, Belarus, Romania, Portugal, the Czech Republic and Austria, which together accounted for a further 38%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +10.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
