Apricot Market Size in Europe
After two years of decline, the Europe apricot market increased by 0.3% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Apricot Production in Europe
In value terms, apricot production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 30%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Greece (X tons), together accounting for 55% of total production. Russia, France, Ukraine and Serbia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Serbia (with a CAGR of +3.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average apricot yield rose significantly to X tons per ha in 2022, increasing by 6.3% against the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, saw a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 13%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of apricots production in Europe reduced slightly to X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 2.5% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Exports in Europe
In 2022, exports of apricots in Europe rose modestly to X tons, surging by 1.6% on 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, apricot exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Spain (X tons) and Italy (X tons) represented the major exporters of apricots in Europe, together creating 62% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Greece (X tons) and France (X tons), together comprising a 20% share of total exports. The following exporters - Serbia (X tons), Moldova (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 10% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +22.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Spain ($X), Italy ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 77% share of total exports. Greece, Austria, Serbia and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Austria, with a CAGR of +27.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -16.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Apricot Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2022, overseas purchases of apricots increased by 4.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, apricot imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Russia (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the main importers of apricots in 2022, accounting for approx. 25% and 22% of total imports, respectively. Austria (X tons) held a 5.7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by France (5%). Romania (X tons), Italy (X tons), Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), the UK (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +12.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Russia ($X) and Austria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 51% share of total imports. France, the UK, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, the Netherlands, Ukraine and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
Romania, with a CAGR of +18.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -13.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
