Artichoke Production in Europe

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons) and France (X tons), together comprising 97% of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +0.5%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.
The average artichoke yield declined to X tons per ha in 2022, leveling off at the year before. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 12%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of artichokes were harvested in Europe; therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 17%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of artichokes increased by 12% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, artichoke exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Spain (X tons) represented the main exporter of artichokes, creating 54% of total exports. France (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by Italy (15%) and the Netherlands (12%).
Exports from Spain increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Netherlands (+6.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +6.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, France (-3.0%) and Italy (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Spain (+12 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+4.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of France (-7.9 p.p.) and Italy (-8.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest artichoke supplying countries in Europe were Spain ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 82% share of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +11.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -7.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 11%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+6.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of artichokes increased by 23% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, artichoke imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
France (X tons) and Italy (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together generating 72% of total imports. Belgium (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Germany (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and the UK (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 21% share of total imports. Switzerland (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the UK (with a CAGR of +10.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X), Italy ($X) and Belgium ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 67% share of total imports. Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.
In terms of the main importing countries, the UK, with a CAGR of +7.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 27%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
