In 2021, the Europe articles of zinc market decreased by -4.3% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 28%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, articles of zinc exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Italy (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Austria (X tons), France (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the key exporters of articles of zinc, together committing 67% of total exports. Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), Poland (X tons), Spain (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), the UK (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bosnia and Herzegovina (with a CAGR of +18.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest articles of zinc supplier in Europe, comprising 27% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with an 8.6% share.

In Germany, articles of zinc exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (+3.1% per year) and Austria (-5.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 15%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Europe

After three years of decline, purchases abroad of articles of zinc increased by 23% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, articles of zinc imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of articles of zinc imports in 2021 were Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons) and France (X tons), together accounting for 41% of total import. Belgium (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Austria (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Hungary (X tons). All these countries together took near 31% share of total imports. Denmark (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Spain (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +14.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest articles of zinc importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), France ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 42% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +13.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 5.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 11%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
