In 2021, shipments abroad of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 55%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons), Norway (X tons), Russia (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), France (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented roughly 79% of total exports in 2021. The Netherlands (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Romania (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Italy (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +68.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and Spain ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 48% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Switzerland, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, the UK, Russia, Italy, Ukraine, Slovakia and Romania, which together accounted for a further 43%.

Switzerland, with a CAGR of +64.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+9.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, imports of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations in Europe surged to X tons, jumping by 21% on 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 24%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a strong expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the key importers of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations in Europe, together generating 38% of total imports. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Norway (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together constituting a 32% share of total imports. The following importers - Austria (X tons), Russia (X tons), the UK (X tons), Spain (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Iceland (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +35.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations in Europe, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 14% share.

In Poland, artificial and colloidal graphite imports expanded at an average annual rate of +28.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hungary (+37.4% per year) and Germany (+1.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Import price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, artificial and colloidal graphite import price increased by +77.7% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 17%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
